 For 2D, try Andengine (  There's also libgdx ( )

For 3D, Unity has some tools (for a price).

What is best game engine for Android?

by Droid » Mon, 28 Mar 2011 00:32:25 GMT

 I reckon that I might need to use game type of content soon,
especially with Xoom.
So which is the easiest to get started on? Is there one starting to
stand out from the crowd?
I prefer late adopting so that I get a viable game engine that I could
use into the future.

Not impressed with openGL in java - seems a bit clunky and hard to

1. Strange Situation Debugging on G1

I'm playing with an application based on the Professional Android
Developers book "Compass" example. Since is uses the "compass" with
the 1.5 SDK it has to debug on the G1.

The application loads and goes through onCreate, onResume, etc. A
worker thread which does the drawing is created in the SurfaceHolder
surfaceCreated call back.

If the G1 is active (display on) this works fine. If the G1 is idle
(screen dark) it gets weird because the thread starts but the various
Paints it needs are null. The way it is written it just loops waiting
for a non-null paint. The subroutines that created the Paints did run,

Justa another tidbit: The LogCat shows "AKMD Application OPEN" and
then "AKMD Application CLOSE" intermixed with my Log statements about
the application progress.

Once I activate the display the thread finds the Paints and start to
run. Then it operates properly.

I did check and surfaceDestroyed is _not_ called. There is a call to

I'm just posting this for information or discussion since I don't like
the thread being started in the surfaceCreated call back so will be
changing the overall structure of the application. This weirdness
should only appear in this debug situation because only then is the
screen dark when an application starts.

2. startActivity(intent) from Tab click works but Intent to class does not

I'm pretty new to android and i'm having an issue with a Tab UI
situation. I have a "Entry" activity which has a bunch of tabs. when
a tab is clicked I've configured the setContent to use intents; so the
tabs switch the activities correctly. The issue is when I start a
specific tab like this:

(this.getResources().getString(R.string.TAB_1)).setContent(new Intent
(this, Exercise.class)));

The content shows up correctly but the onTouch events do not get

If I do this (on the tab click) everything works correctly:

final Intent exercise = new Intent(Entry.this, Exercise.class);

but my tabs at the top are lost....

what am I doing wrong? I'm sure I've missed something simple.
