How to remove the on screen keyboard?

 I can toggle it from the IMM but can't seem to detect the current
state.  In any event, there must be a cleaner way - after I get some
text input from the user I want to restore the screen without making
them press the back key.

 There is a method on the input method manager to hide the IME.
