Note: Don't mean to double post, but I didn't see my initial post
appear. Reposting.

Hi, I've been tasked with designing the UI for our Android app and I'm
trying to gather as much information as I can to be well informed.
Quick question... What's the bar at the top of the screen called?
I'm trying to refer to it in some documentation and would like the
official title for it.

Thanks!

Ok, thanks. BTW, I guess I should've just asked where I could find
things like this for future reference... Is there a G1 UI glossary or
something similar that lays out all the default elements?

1. Choosing Dev Phone

I'm sure this comes up once a while

For me, this is one developer buying one phone. Not someone who can
afford a fleet of them.

Google Market offers two dev phones. They have a few specs but I don't
know if it tells the whole picture. What retail phones are these ones
most like?

Dev Phone 1: Keyboard. No Wifi.
Dev Phone 2: No Keyboard. Seems more advanced otherwise than Dev Phone
1.

Would you recommend one of these - or neither because you think they
will never run 2.0? In that case I would be stuck with trying to
unlock a locked phone. I don't know how successful I'd be at that - I
never even managed to unlock a Nokia phone from AT&T after the
contract was up.

The things I would hope to test out that I can't do with an emulator
(at least don't know how):
GPS
Sensors.
Gestures.

The dev phones don't seem to mention what sensors they have.

Possibly useful (not sure):
Some 3D Capability

I'm thinking the keyboard is helpful because I can always test with
and without it.

2. com.google Authenticator for the new android.accounts.AccountManager API.

I am working on writing (and eventually releasing on the Android
marketplace) a Google authenticator that will authenticate with Google
and return a Google Auth Token (see:
http://code.google.com/apis/gdata/docs/auth/overview.html).
The ultimate goal is to have this authenticator mirror the behavior of
the com.google authenticator that comes with the Motorola Droid.

This will hopefully allow developers to have such an authenticator
available to them on the SDK emulator as well as end-users with any
phone running Android 2.0 that does not have the official Google
version of the authenticator (ie: custom ROMs, future phones that
don't get the full Google package, etc.).

Also, since there is no word on how long before any phones besides the
Motorola Droid get Android 2.0, this will hopefully allow developers
to start leveraging the new AccountManager APIs sooner rather than
later (ie: via the SDK emulator).

I have created an open source project for this endeavor (see link
below) that contains the first bit of work I have done on getting the
Authenticator writen. If you are interested in contributing let me
know, I am definitely open to the help or if you can offer insight as
to the proper use of the new AccountManager API or some place I am
using it wrong it would be much appreciated. Worst case scenario I'll
plug away at this in my free time and at least people can use it as a
reference for writing their own Authenticators in the future.
