 i know all about get menu references on callbacks, but i want to
create one from scratch - as in

new ContextMenu() or new Menu() (I know that's an interface, so
obviously that won't work).

1. Is there an easy way to make EditText look like TextView but still behave like EditText?

You should actually be using an attribute instead of a direct reference:

style="?android:attr/textViewStyle"

The underlying @style reference isn't public, but the above attr is.
